The Images & Sounds eBook comprises over 140 videos linked to text. Discover a three-layered Framework for Audiovisual Composing that guides the reader through the process of creating videos. Uncover how art, drama, dance and music underpin composing in images and sounds. Explore how audiovisual composing began through photography, radio, film and television. Find out how narrative strategies, structures, codes, conventions and techniques work in a specific audiovisual composition. Observe and view audiovisual composing being practiced by children, students, adults and researchers. Unearth innovative audiovisual - essays, letters, reports, portraits, poems, and case studies, from participants in the UK, across Europe, Peru and China. Encounter animation.

Images & Sounds shows how audiovisual language parallels and complements written language. In the field of professional publishing: film mirrors novels; television and on-line news parallels newspapers; documentaries emulate books on history, geography and science; and television lifestyle and reality shows imitate magazines. However, audiovisual composing has not complemented written composing within education. Audiovisual essays, reports and case studies, for subjects across the curriculum, are not found alongside written ones. Students do not create audiovisual short stories and poetry in audiovisual language classes that match such activities in written language classes: and do not study professional audiovisual texts as they currently analyze written literature. This is a massively missed opportunity. Mass mixed-media communicative competence for the 21st century, should match written literacy developed in the 20th century.

On opening the eBook, you first view the front cover for a few seconds before being taken to the Contents page, your Gateway to the pathways and layers contained within Images and Sounds. The Legal Page, Acknowledgements and Introduction – Preface, and list of Chapters with Titles – Audiovisual Catalogue and Guide can be found on the Contents Page. The Audiovisual Catalogue contains the audiovisual Contents List, for each chapter, as screen shots. The screen shot activates the video. The video has 3 option buttons. Show Details takes the reader to another screen containing credits, focus/background notes, and key concepts. The notes and references for the text, can be located by a small blue star in the body of the text.

The eBook links to www.images-and-sounds.net - the Library contains additional related contents - Backstories for chapters 5 – 8 and References to films and videos used in the annotations.

Images & Sounds Audiovisual Language comes in two formats: a fully functioning eBook and a Papertronic Book (a hybrid printed and electronic version). The eBook and Papertronic Book have the same operational system and page design.
